Standard Distributed Audio Systems typically utilize a control wire (often CAT5) as well as speaker wire (see Section 1.1.1 for wiring details). The CAT5 wire sends signals from a keypad back to a centrally located controller, which provides volume control and source selection for the different listening zones in the system. The speaker wire delivers amplified audio from a centrally located amplifier out to the speakers in different listening zones. In some cases, the amplifier may be built into the controller, which saves space and simplifies the required interconnections.
